So, what’s the best option for taking family photos?- Lifestyle family photos captured in your home? Heading out on location? Or a session at Milk Photography Studio with our Auckland family photographer?
There are a few things to consider when making this decision…..
I like to speak with clients on the phone first to learn about their family and what their children love. For young families, the studio environment works wonderfully. The neutral aesthetic with soft timber floors and white walls is perfect for babies to crawl and sit up, and the controlled light and warmth are a great advantage compared to Auckland’s unpredictable weather.
Since kids and toddlers have short attention spans, constant light is essential for getting the best shots quickly. We also offer a fantastic range of outfits to choose from for your family photography session.
Advantages of Shooting in a Photography Studio
Challenges:
During our phone discussions, we often talk about the best location for your family photography session. Sometimes, a family isn’t sure at first, but after we see photos of their home, we might suggest photographing there. It all depends on the look they want to achieve and, of course, how good the light is. It’s exciting to step out of the studio and work in a different environment.
When we do a home lifestyle session, good lighting is crucial. A clean, tidy home with plenty of natural light is ideal. There’s something truly special about photographing in someone’s home—it creates a natural and intimate setting that’s meaningful to the family. In fact, some of the best family portraits we’ve taken have been in clients’ homes.
Sometimes families are more relaxed in their own homes. However, the key is to find what works best for your family. It’s all about communicating about the outcome and look of the photos you’re after.

Challenges:
This was Roschelle + Leigh’s fourth session with us, so it was time for an in-home family photography shoot. They were initially hesitant, worried their home might not photograph well. However we knew when we saw the photos it would photograph beautifully.
Taking photos in Auckland can be stunning when the weather cooperates! When shooting large groups, we always suggest choosing a location that holds sentimental value for the family. It’s also important to consider bystanders; a private setting can be ideal, and we know quite a few perfect spots—just ask us! For outdoor family photography, the golden hour, which is an hour before sunset, offers the best light.
Avoid shooting in the middle of the day due to harsh shadows and strong highlights on faces.

Challenges:
Ultimately, the choice depends on the family’s preferences, the children’s ages and temperaments, and the desired outcome of the photo session.
As a photographer, it’s essential to discuss these options with your clients to ensure that their needs and expectations are met.
